So as I stated in my description, I work at a department store part time while I'm in college. I really enjoy the work, especially since I'm very extroverted and enjoy having constant social interactions. But of course, some customers can be a little angsty.
I ran into a particularly bad case this evening (which I actually think is completely justified) when a woman rang up over $100 worth of merchandise, and then proceeded to pull out her large pocketbook and tell me she had " a lot of coupons" and "wanted to see which ones would work." I cringed to myself, because I knew that we weren't actually running any coupons that she would be able to use.
Over the next 5 minutes, she pulled out three different coupons, and none of them worked due to various 'exclusions' in them. The first was "15% off" but was only on doorbusters. The next was a "$10 off" which didn't go into effect until the next day. Finally she had a "20% off window coverings" but didn't buy any window coverings.
She got really angry at me and told me that she was outraged, and had been shopping at X Store for 30 years, etc... Now, it's definitely not my fault that she brought in wrong coupons. But I'm not saying the situation is her fault either. It's just stupid for a store to publish and send out a bunch of coupons but make so many exclusions that the customer can't even use them. In the end I decided to just give her the 15% off from her first coupon, but I had to call over my manager to override the system. The entire thing just left a bad taste in my mouth.
At least I have a day off tomorrow, so then I'll write about some less frustrating thoughts.
